Components of the Program

The Teaching Excellence Component

  • The Teaching Excellence Workshop:    An annual three-day workshop held at Kuwait University. The workshop exposes faculty members to the principles of teaching excellence at the college level that enables workshop participants to better: apply the science of learning to educating college-level students, define learning outcomes and performance targets of their students, deliver engaging content that promotes learning and critical thinking, utilize a model of moral evolution in designing course content and delivery, draw upon the guiding values that govern the teaching profession, utilize instructional and evaluation technology to enrich learning and manage teaching workload, and relate research interests to teaching activities. The workshop covers all Kuwait University faculty groups, including junior staff, mid-career staff, senior faculty, and teaching assistants.

  • Teaching Excellence Colloquium at UC Berkeley:  The intense annual one-week long colloquium utilizes the outcomes from the Teaching Excellence Workshop held at Kuwait University to identify, design, and prepare to implement a pedagogical project in a specific area of interest. It utilizes the expertise and resources at UC Berkeley to develop skills, and practice techniques, to coach and provide formative feedback to Kuwait University faculty visiting Berkeley about pedagogy.                                               


The Research Component 

  •  The Kuwait Visiting Fellows Program at UC Berkeley:  The fellowship offers Kuwait University scholars of different ranks, from recent Post-Doctoral recipients to Professors, the opportunity to pursue their own research in an intellectual and collaborative work environment, access to UCB’s resources, and the opportunity to interact with UCB faculty.

The Publication Component

  • Research Publication Workshop:   A two-day workshop held in Kuwait offering training for junior faculty at Kuwait University seeking to publish their work in refereed journals. The workshop is conducted by a senior faculty member at UCB with expertise in scientific publishing in refereed journals who has served as Editor of a major peer-refereed journal for several years, and the Executive Editor of a major university who specializes in social sciences and the humanities books. The workshop will focus on the following themes: The scientific publication process, ethics of publishing scientific research, presenting scientific information for publishing in refereed journals, the blind peer review process, articulating responses to reviewers’ comments, searching for appropriate journals and book publishers, answering publishers’ questionnaires, submitting a book proposal, packaging a book manuscript.

The Professional Component

This aims to enhance the interaction between UC Berkeley and the professional schools in Kuwait University with a focus on College of Architecture. It offers tailored collaborative initiatives between similar units at the respective institutions. 

  • Lecture Series: The programs support the organization of lectures by UC Berkeley faculty at Kuwait University addressing topics of mutual interests.

  • Joint Studios:   An annual joint design studio in which groups of architecture students from UC Berkeley and Kuwait University collaborate and produce designs to be assessed and compared. The initiative includes an exchange of visits between student and faculty at UC Berkeley and their counterparts at Kuwait University.
  • Architecture Faculty Workshop for Curriculum Development:    An intense workshop bringing together relevant UCB faculty members from different fields and their counterparts at the College of Architecture. It aims to support Kuwait University faculty in designing and implementing curricula that encourage innovative teaching and enable students to develop the desired skills.
