Process Development for Automated Sorting and Recycling of Polyolefin from Mixed Plastic Waste

Metal and Recycling company and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

The project was to identify technologies or technology cascades capable of automatic sorting of plastics after initial shredding and washing/drying steps. This would enable reducing the amount of disposed plastic waste to landfill, Based on materials provided by Metal & Recycling Company and existing experience with plastics sorting technologies.

Optimizing Dairy Farming Practice in Kuwait Dairy and Food Establishment

Kuwait Dairy and Food Establishment and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

Kuwait Dairy and Food Establishment (KDFE) audited the dairy farm practice to find the possible and visible solutions for improving the performance of dairy farming in order to gain more profit from the business. This solution was supported with evidence and cost benefit analysis (feasibility study) to convince the decision makers of the value of the research in impacting the performance of the dairy farms.  Hidden potential profits have been made visible and could be converted into real profit by carrying out the formulated business plan and steps of improvement. This would be an advantage for the whole dairy sector. The new business model and developed practice needed professional and highly educated human resources for the job vacancies.

Feasibility Study of a Pilot Program for Deployment of Nano-based Fuel Saving Devices in Kuwait

Agility Public Warehousing Company and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

The project is an initial feasibility study to map the best way forward to determine benefits and merits of a fuel saving device program in Kuwait. Next stage will be to deploy the product with the help of the company’s technology provider.

Assessment of a Steel Plant to Evaluate Possibilities to Avoid Hazardous EAF Dust

United Steel Industrial Co. and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

The main problem of United Steel Industrial Company was the disposal of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust generated in the steel making plant. This resulted in additional or excess of costs the company wanted to minimize. The Fraunhofer Institute found a solution to generate revenue from the EAF dust instead of paying for disposal. The idea was to recycle this material in the furnace with a special system, which results in smaller generated quantity and with high percentage of Zinc that can be sold.

Evaluation of Dynamic Inductive Charging for Existing Warehouses

Agility Public Warehousing Company and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

The project started with an overview of methods and technologies for contactless energy transfer. After collecting the data of two selected warehouses, a simulation started for comparison of contactless energy charging to plug-based energy charging. The target was the identification of advantages and disadvantages, as well as, economic benefits of the technological study. During the project, testing of new, advanced technology material was preformed. Targeting less consumption of raw material and increase in efficiency production. Results led to the best operation conditions for dynamic inductive charging.

Modernization of KCC Laboratories

Kuwait Catalyst Company and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

The objectives of the project were to update and complete Kuwait Catalyst Company’s laboratory equipment to cover all the company’s analytical requirements, acquire a suitable laboratory database to improve connectivity throughout operations, and develop procedures to improve laboratory operations.  The project was conducted in collaboration with a technology provider, Fraunhofer IKTS, with cofunding from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.

Improvement of Production Process of HDPE Pipes

Boubyan Petrochemical Company (K.S.C.) and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

Muna Noor faced a challenge/problem when it attempted to produce a large diameter HDPE pipe thick walled. The problem was the pipes would sag when attempting to increase the diameter to the required large measurement. Several attempts where made to overcome the problem (trial & error) but ended up in increased costs, wasted time and raw material.

Development of The New Performance Bottles

Qaroh P.E.T. Products Co. and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

This project is for the development of new performance bottles with the aim of minimizing the weight of the bottle without compromising its other characteristics. The outcomes of the project have brought several benefits to the company, in which it has reduced the usage of P.E.T in bottles annually, made financial and environmental savings and have provided Qaroh products a competitive advantage over similar producers in the market.

Flexpipe & RTP

Kuwait International Advanced Industries Company (K.S.C.) and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

Kuwait International Advanced Industries (KAI) has partnered with Flexpipe to produce a Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipe (RTP) that can be used in upstream, middle stream and downstream transportation of oil & gas. KFAS supported the test pilot of such pipes in the oil fields for Kuwait Oil Company (KOC).

Development of Special Polyethylene Grade for Niche Application

EQUATE Petrochemical Co. and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

This project is for the development of value added Polyethylene (PE) grades for different applications, such as electrical conducting and producing specialty membranes. The objective of this project is to enter niche applications, which were not previously offered by standard grades. This is expected to form new opportunities for convertors to enter new markets and present additional applications.

R&D Support for Multi-Layer PE Tube Production Line

Boubyan Petrochemical Company and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences

Muna Noor faced a challenge in producing a pipe for one of its customers. That is a large diameter, thick walled polyethylene pipe that is required to meet a specific application. The
production parameters, especially during the cooling period after exiting the die, need to be carefully specified.
