KFAS Renews Strategic Agreement with ICTP

March 26, 2018

The Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science (KFAS) and The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) signed a new agreement on Feb 1st , renewing their long-term strategic cooperation for a minimum of an additional five years.

The new agreement extends the mutual commitment of both parties toward continuously improving the research capabilities of Kuwaiti and Arab scientists through exposure to the latest knowledge and practices in mathematics and physics. In accordance with the new agreement, KFAS will continue sponsoring joint programs with ICTP, as part of the ICTP postdoctoral fellowships. This is one of the oldest international programs sponsored by KFAS in cooperation with some of the most prominent scientific organizations, research centers and universities across the world.

Previously granted to three Kuwaiti scientists, the ICTP Post-doctoral Fellowship sponsored by KFAS allows  post-doctorate scientists to resume their research in the center's fields of expertise. Candidates can be either Kuwaitis or individuals from Arab countries working in Kuwait. This fellowship allows recipients to enjoy access to highly advanced facilities under the supervision of ICTP's scientists for up to 12 months. ICTP scientists are considered among the finest in their fields, and with the input of KFAS and ICTP successful candidates will be able to decide on their field of choice.

In an effort to foster the advancement of science across Kuwait's national priority fields, KFAS will continue to support other ICTP activities. This includes the Postgraduate Diploma Programme, as well as sponsoring Arab scientists to travel to Italy and attend key conferences, lectures, and workshops on the scientific calendar of ICTP.

This sponsorship covers travel expenses and daily allowances for a period of up to 12 months. KFAS also supports Arab students who have been accepted into the Centre's Postgraduate Diploma Programme. In addition, ICTP and KFAS will join together to develop capacity building pilot projects for science and mathematics teachers in the region.

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) was founded in 1964 by the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Abdus Salam. It is one of the most prominent scientific organizations that partners with KFAS. Since its inception, ICTP has been one of the major forces behind global efforts to advance scientific expertise in the developing world. Operating under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), ICTP provides scientists from developing countries with the opportunity to continue their education and acquire skills needed for sustainable growth in their countries of origin.

The Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science (KFAS) provides ongoing support to a selection of local, regional and international scientific organizations, thus sustaining its leading role in boosting research and innovation skills in Kuwait and the region.  The purpose of such efforts is to enhance public knowledge of science, facilitate innovation and research, support the exchange of information between scientists, and elevate the quality of individuals within the private and public sectors of Kuwait and the Arab region.
